Derechos Condemns Bomb Attack on Police Station
Derechos Human Rights today condemned the car bomb attack on a police
station in the Ate-Vitarte district of Lima, Peru. Sendero Luminoso
(Shining Path) is suspected of carrying out the attack based on the
discovery by police of leaflets at the attack scene.
Sendero Luminoso began its campaign of terror in May 1980 with an
attack on Chuschi in the department of Ayacucho prior to elections.
Since that time, it has been responsible for thousands of deaths and
injuries in bomb attacks and shootings.
"The use of violence for political purposes can never be justified,"
said Michael Katz-Lacabe, executive director of Derechos Human
Rights. "Violence only begets more violence, as we have seen in the
Peruvian government's response to previous Sendero attacks," added
Mr. Katz-Lacabe.
Derechos calls on Sendero Luminoso to cease it attacks and end the
cycle of violence that has plagued Peru for nearly 20 years.
