EU Commission calls on Russia, Ukraine to agree on provisional gas price
Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger said Russia and Ukraine were expected to agree on temporary prices for gas to resume halted supplies until the debt dispute was settled.
In an interview with the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Oettinger said provisional prices could be in force until court consideration results were received.
Oettinger proposed to check next autumn how much gas Russia sent every day though Ukraine's transit system and how much went to the EU from Ukraine's border, in order not to have misunderstandings and false accusations.
Oettinger also said the EU would not let Russia disrupt gas supplies to Ukraine from the West. It is necessary to do everything possible to technically realize it (reverse supply), he said.
The commissioner plans to visit Moscow in late August to meet with Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak and Gazprom head Alexei Miller.
An EU Commission source told ITAR-TASS that the commission proposed August 29 as a date for a meeting of Oettinger and Novak. Russia has confirmed the date, but it has not been confirmed by the ministry officially.
