China urges Japan to respect historical facts
China has condemned remarks made by one of the governors of Japan's broadcaster NHK, in which he denied that a massacre had taken place in Nanjing.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei said the Nanjing massacre was a heinous crime committed by Japanese militarists during their invasion of China. He said denying such historical facts is a blatant challenge to international justice and human conscience. Hong Lei urged Japan to respect history, and take concrete action to regain trust from its Asian neighbors and the international community.
Naoki Hyakuta, a member of the NHK board of governors, made the comments during a campaign for a right-wing candidate in the Tokyo gubernatorial election. Japan's Asahi Shimbun newspaper quoted him as saying that the massacre "never happened" and was "a fabrication" to hide atrocities carried out against Japan. He said the history of the massacre should not be taught to Japanese children.
