National Memorial goes online to remember victims, promote peace
The NATIONAL MEMORIAL website (http://www.cngongji.cn/) was officially launched on Sunday, symbolizing the start of related commemoration activities for the Nanjing Massacre victims in World War II.
Built by Xinhuanet with the sponsorship of the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, the online NATIONAL MEMORIAL has three editions in the Chinese, Japanese and English languages.
In order to remember those killed by the Japanese invaders, expose the invaders' crimes and remember the ruinous disaster of the Chinese people, China decided in February this year to set December 13 as the national memorial day for the Nanjing Massacre victims.
"The NATIONAL MEMORIAL aims at popularizing the relevant knowledge about national memorial activities, routinizing the commemoration for the dead compatriots, helping the Chinese across the world and the peace-loving international friends to know the history and remember the victims anytime and anywhere. It also aims to let them keep in mind the history and cherish peace," Zhu Chengshan, Curator of the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, said.
"Interactivity is one of the biggest features of the NATIONAL MEMORIALwebsite. The website has the 'online memorial' area. Netizens are able to light candles, present flowers, plant trees and ring bells on the webpage, achieving vivid dynamic effects and solemnity," Zhu added.
The color scheme of the website is blood-red, black and white, so as to highlight the condolences and memorial for the victims, said Liu Jiawen, deputy editor in chief of Xinhuanet and editor in chief of the NATIOANL MEMORIAL.
Besides, the NATIONAL MEMORIAL and the website of the Memorial Hall will cooperate seamlessly and complement mutually so as to better achieve the mission of history education and peace promotion..
It is learned the NATIONAL MEMORIAL will add editions in four more languages on Dec. 13. Leaders of the Jiangsu province, Nanjing city and Xinhuanet attended the launching ceremony.
Wang Yanwen, member of standing committee of the Jiangsu provincial CPC committee and director of the department of information of the Jiangsu provincial CPC committee, Xu Ning, member of standing committee of the Nanjing municipal CPC committee and director of the department of information of the Nanjing municipal CPC committee, Tian Shubin, Xinhuanet CEO, and Feng Cheng, Jiangsu bureau chief of Xinhua News Agency attended the ceremony.
