Japan PM urged to correct mistakes on history
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying has urged Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to face up to the country's history and correct its mistakes. She made the remarks after Abe indicated he might visit the Yasukuni Shrine again.
"Prime Minister Abe has shut the door to dialogue with China by his actions. And his comments haven't demonstrated any willingness to improve relations with China and other Asian neighbors.
As Japan's government leader, he should face up to the country's history, adapt to the trends of time, reflect upon and correct mistakes, and take these as his due responsibilities," Hua Chunying said.
Hua Chunying added that confrontation and provocation are dead ends. On Wednesday night, Abe told Japan's Fuji Television that despite the criticism over his visit to the Yasukuni Shrine, he would continue fulfilling his responsibilities as Prime Minister.
He said it would be wrong to let the backlash prevent him from visiting the shrine. Japan's Jiji Press said the Prime Minister's comments indicated he might make another visit while in office. Abe also objected to building a new national shrine to replace the Yasukuni. He said he was confident that, if given an opportunity, he could explain his intentions behind the visit to other countries.
