A huge gas discovery in the Hassi R'Mel field in Algeria

Algeria has succeeded in discovering a huge gas field in the giant Hassi Rmel field, becoming the fourth discovery this year (2022).

The national oil company, Sonatrach, announced that it had been able to identify new important potentials of hydrocarbons in the "LD2" carbonate deposit of Lias, at the level of the Hassi R'Mel field.

Huge potential

According to the statement seen by the Specialized Energy Platform, the initial assessment of this potential showed a volume of between 100 and 340 billion cubic meters of condensed gas.

This volume of gas condensate (condensate) constitutes one of the largest reassessments of reserves in the past 20 years.

A program of development works is being completed to confirm the estimated volumes and work on an urgent production of 10 million cubic meters per day, starting in November 2022.

It is noteworthy that Algeria possesses 2.3 trillion cubic meters of natural gas reserves - which the country discovered in the Hassi R'Mel field in 1956 - by the end of 2020, down from 4.3 trillion cubic meters in 2019, according to data from the British company BP.

Discoveries 2022

The discovery of new gas is a quarter of the hydrocarbon sector in Algeria, this year, as it was preceded by 3 previous discoveries that boosted oil and gas reserves in the country.

Announcements of oil discoveries in Algeria began during 2022, on March 20, in the Zemla El-Arabi area located in the Berkine Basin, with estimates of up to 140 million barrels of oil.

In the testing phase, the well produced about 7,000 barrels of oil per day, with 140,000 cubic meters of associated gas per day.

On March 22nd, an oil discovery was announced in the Tarsem well west of Okla Al-Nasser-2, located north of the Hassi Messaoud field, which raised the crude reserves in the west of Okla Al-Nasser 2 to 961 million barrels of crude oil.

The Algerian company Sonatrach estimated the reserves of the new well at 415 million barrels.

At the end of March, Algeria was on a date with the third discovery, in the "Oulad Sidi Cheikh-1" well, with a flow rate of 925 barrels per day of oil, and 6,456 cubic meters per day of gas.
