Argentine fugitives apprehended in Spain
Two Argentine fugitives, accused of having formed part of a right-wing terrorist organization during the 1970s, were arrested yesterday in Spain and face extradition to Argentina to face war crimes trials.
Beatriz María Arenaza, who was arrested in La Coruña, Galicia, and Daniel Alejandro Ullúa, held in Majorca, were both allegedly members of the National University Concentration (CNU), described in Argentina as an appendix of the state-run terrorist group the Argentine Anti-communist Alliance (AAA or Triple A), led by then-President Isabel Perón's shadowy right-hand man, José López Rega.
The Justice and Human Rights Ministry had set a 100,000-peso reward to anyone providing information leading to the capture of Arenaza and Ullúa. The latter was sought for involvement in the murder of deputy Ramón Pablo Rojas in San Juan in November, 1975.
The CNU was an organization originally linked to the Peronist Youth, which operated in different Argentine universities, principally in Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires province, where the group acted as shock troops who burst into universities with guns, chains and other weaponry to intimidate student movements.
Suspect Commits Suicide
A former deputy chief of police wanted on crimes committed in the last military dictatorship committed suicide yesterday rather than face trial.
Guillermo Devoto, who was accused of appropriating a child of persons kidnapped by the military, had recently fled to Miami, where he took his life by shooting himself in the head.
Devoto had been in Argentina last year and had been prohibited from leaving the country by Federal Judge Daniel Rafecas but the suspect ignored the ruling and escaped to Miami.
Devoto is the seventh suspect of crimes committed during the last military dictatorship to have killed themselves before facing trial.
