South Korea has gone a long way. It holds now a democratic government, with free elections. The judiciary is becoming more
independent, though there is still significant corruption. Most political prisoners have been released, though some still
linger in prison. The National Security Law is used to imprison peaceful anti-government activists, and the
Security Surveillance Law is used to track the activities of former political prisoners. Prison conditions are hard, and
there are reports of ill-treatment of prisoners. Freedom of expression is generally respected, though anti-defamatory laws
have been to silence the press. The government has called for laws to regulate the internet, and further infringe on its
citizen's freedom of speech and privacy.
